(kind of)

Welcome to GEEKLOPEDIA, the new column where we cleverly define everything under the warm rays of the Great Geek Sun, in any and all aspects of Assorted Geekery! Be it movies, comics, toys, books, or video games, we have strong opinions, and we're gonna let you know how to think about them! Don't agree? Let us know. But it doesn't mean you're going to be right. Each new article will introduce a new term/idea to the Geeklopedia, so sit down, strap in, and get ready to have the Geek Hive Mind reorganized the way it should have been all along...

People, people, people. We are a community. As a community, we need to recognize some shared nomenclature in order to communicate as efficently and clearly as possible. And one of the places we seem to have a lot of confusion is in the usage of the terms Geek, Nerd, and Dork (or Dweeb).

These are wholly seperate--though at first glace similar--terms. There are, of course, examples of people that run the gamut; there are geeks who bleed into dorkiness and nerds who can hold their own as geeks (kind of like a Venn Diagram of Geekdom, which is an example of Nerdiness bleeding into my Geekiness), but if you fall mainly into one area or another, you need to know what you are, and we all need to recognize these terms in order to best contribute to the overall health and well-being of our delightful community of fablously smart people who are currently ruling the pop culture/entertainment roost. Because, truly, if you missed the whole Bill-Gates-defined-the-21st-Century-and-changed-the-world-thing, well, then you're probably a hopeless Dork. Or Dweeb.

So without further ado...

- GEEKS are people who are particularly obsessed with and/or knowledgeable about compartively useless pop culture things, be it comics, movies, TV, video games, etc. They tend to be surprisingly social creatures, blossoming later in life than non-geeks, and forming close bonds with other geeks based on their shared affinity for geek-worthy subjects. They usually can and do find girlfriends, though typically through their senses of humor rather than more...physical means. Geeks enjoy their lives tremendously and are typically easier to amuse than non-geeks in terms of most forms of entertainment, as geeks WANT to be amused and seek pass times with the kind of passion and focus that nerds (see below) tend to devote to subjects that actually 'matter'. This is not to say that geeks will accept any and everything presented to them as entertainment; in fact, they often vicously attack anything they believe offends their remarkably well-honed sensibilities. It's just that when they love something, be it Star Wars or Halo or Superman, they REALLY love it, and woe to anyone that deigns to speak unkindly about thier favorite franchise, character, console, etc. The world of the geek is a world of passion and enjoyment.

- NERDS are people who are very smart, and tend to know many things about subjects that have more real-world applications, such as math, engineering, and books like fucking Proust so they can sound all smart and shit at parties. They are less socially capable than geeks and tend to aspire to seclusion rather than getting to know people. Or, y'know, girls. But of course nerds can also manage to get their social shit together long enough to find a girl, especially if their particular area of smarts leads to a sweet salary, which is often the case with nerds. Theirs is a world of facts and information, and as we all know, information is what makes the world go 'round. So being a nerd has its definite upside.

- DORKS or DWEEBS are people who have no social skills to speak of; they tend to be awkward and difficult to have a conversation with. They have no defining characteristics outside of being annoying to most other people, and form their opinions and views based on what they've overheard other people saying. Girls are creatures of mystery and therefore usually avoided. The world is a scary and confusing place for a dork and/or dweeb, and no one really wants to take the time to usher them into the real world because they can't stand to be annoyed so much. Which is understandable.

These are not to be debated. You can try, but you will be defeated. Soundly. But I say unto thee-BRING IT. For I am a proud geek, and a formidable one.
